Summary of Position:

This position is responsible for setting up, operating, and adjusting turning & milling equipment to produce precision components. The role requires strong blueprint reading skills, mathematical accuracy, and the ability to use precision measuring tools to ensure parts meet strict tolerances. The machinist must be able to work independently, troubleshoot issues, and maintain tools and equipment to support efficient production.

Principal Responsibilities:

Core Responsibilities:

  • Lift workpiece manually or with hoist, position, and secure workpiece in holding device, machine table, chuck, centers, or fixture using clamps and wrenches.
  • Position and secure work piece on machine, using holding devices, measuring instruments, hand tools and hoists.
  • Study blueprints, layouts, sketches, or work orders to assess work piece specifications, determine tooling instructions, tools and materials needed and the sequence of operation.
  • Compute dimensions, tolerances, and angles of work pieces or machines, according to specifications and knowledge of metal properties and shop mathematics.
  • Verify alignment of work piece on machine, using measuring instruments such as rules, gauges, or calipers.
  • Observe milling or planning machine operation and adjust controls to ensure conformance with specified tolerances.
  • Move controls to set cutting specifications, to position cutting tools and work pieces in relation to each other, and to start machines.
  • Select cutting speed, feed rates and depth of cuts, applying knowledge of metal properties and shop mathematics.
  • Move cutters or material manually or by turning hand wheels, or engage automatic feeding mechanisms to mill work pieces to specifications.
  • Remove work pieces from machines, and check to ensure that they conform to specifications, using measuring instruments such as micrometers, gauges, calipers, and micrometers.
  • Replace worn tools, use hand tools, and sharpen dull tools, using bench grinders.
  • Ability to read blueprints, and use measuring instruments to determine conformance to specifications.
  • Motivated, accountable self-starter.
  • Lean knowledge desired but not required.
  • Own tools.

Scope of Position:

This role sets up and operates milling equipment, positioning and securing workpieces and selecting tooling to complete jobs according to specifications. The machinist ensures accuracy by verifying dimensions, adjusting machine controls, and using precision measuring instruments to maintain required tolerances. The position also maintains tools and equipment, replaces or sharpens tooling as needed, and follows all safety and quality standards.

Education:

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Prior Experience/Skills:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 5+ years of manufacturing experience
  • Ability to follow simple written and verbal instructions * Good understanding of blueprint reading with regards to machining diameters (ID &OD) surfaces and simple shapes.
  • Must be able to adhere to specified tolerance and use simple measuring devices like calipers, micrometers and depth micrometers to measure the part.

Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job one would occasionally be required to stand, sit, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk and hear and use fingers and hands to feel objects, tools and equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities require close vision, distance vision, depth perceptions and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Overtime may be necessary as workloads dictate. This may include weekdays and weekends.
  • Job duties will generally be performed in an office environment but may require visits to the production site.
