Why this job is worth considering

Halco Production Machining in Shreveport is hiring for its Swiss department and is open to two levels of experience. If you can set up jobs and solve machining problems on Swiss lathes, the pay is $34–$45/hour. If you are strong at running and monitoring Swiss machines but not yet doing full setups, they still want to talk to you at $25–$33/hour.

The schedule is a day shift, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and the start time is flexible because the plant runs 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. Benefits include health, dental, 401(k) and an end-of-year bonus. Programming is handled by Halco's programming team, so programming from scratch is not expected, even at the machinist level.

What you'll be doing

Swiss machinist level

  • Run machines and establish or troubleshoot the production process
  • Set up and troubleshoot the bar-feeding arrangement
  • Interpret complete drawings, tolerances, GD&T and setup requirements
  • Perform complete changeovers: tooling, collets, guide bushings where used, and associated equipment
  • Select, install, touch off and adjust tools, and diagnose wear and breakage
  • Establish initial offsets and determine corrections for machining problems
  • Read, edit and prove out programs
  • Establish or adjust speeds and feeds for material, tooling, finish and tool life
  • Verify setup parts, diagnose dimensional problems and support first-piece approval
  • Diagnose recurring dimensional, finish, chatter, chip-control, tooling and part-transfer problems
  • Improve cycle time, tool life, setup time, consistency and scrap rates
  • Document setup requirements and train operators to run and inspect the job

Swiss operator level

  • Run previously set-up machines and monitor cycles, alarms and output
  • Verify material against instructions and replenish bar stock
  • Read job travelers, inspection instructions and the dimensions needed for production checks
  • Assist with changeovers or perform limited setups within training
  • Monitor tool wear and replace inserts or tools using established procedures
  • Make approved wear-offset adjustments to maintain dimensions
  • Select or load approved programs according to shop procedures
  • Use established speeds and feeds and report cutting problems
  • Perform scheduled checks with appropriate gauges, record results and identify suspect parts
  • Recognize abnormal conditions, stop when needed and address routine issues within training
  • Report recurring issues, suggest improvements and communicate machine status to the next shift

At either level

  • Safe operation, housekeeping and routine machine care
  • Production records and quality checks
  • Reporting or containing nonconforming parts

Machines, controls and software

  • CNC Swiss-type lathes, all Star brand, with bar feeders
  • Experience with LNS bar feeders is preferred
  • Programming is handled by Halco's programming team, so programming from scratch is not expected

What we're looking for

Swiss machinist level

  • About 5 years of experience on Swiss machines, preferably Star Swiss machines
  • Able to complete full setups independently, edit programs and diagnose machining problems

Swiss operator level

  • Experience running Swiss machines in production
  • Comfortable with routine offsets and insert changes, and willing to grow into setups

Preferred

  • Star Swiss machine experience
  • LNS bar feeder experience

Pay, benefits and schedule

  • Pay: $34–$45/hour at the Swiss machinist level; $25–$33/hour at the Swiss operator level
  • Health and dental insurance
  • 401(k)
  • End-of-year bonus
  • Negotiable PTO
  • All major holidays paid
  • Schedule: day shift, Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with a flexible start time (the plant runs 24 hours a day, 5 days a week)
