Position Overview
The Quality Technician supports Atlas’s machining and repair divisions by performing manual inspections, managing calibration systems, and providing shop-floor quality support. This role is ideal for someone with a machining background and strong blueprint-reading skills who wants to broaden their impact in Quality.
You will work on one-off, non-production jobs, determine inspection methods independently, prevent issues before they occur, and contribute directly to improving shop quality and processes.
Essential Responsibilities
- Determine the best inspection approach based on job requirements, part geometry, and tolerance stack-ups
- Perform incoming, in-process, and final inspections using micrometers, calipers, indicators, bore gauges, and similar tools
- Perform NDT and special inspections including:
- Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT)
- Material analysis (LIB gun)
- Surface profile / roughness checks
- Hardness testing
- Read and interpret blueprints and GD&T to determine inspection methods
- Use Faro Arm or similar equipment for dimensional checks per traveler and print
- Document inspection results, nonconformances, and maintain inspection records
- Tag and segregate parts requiring rework or hold status
- Collaborate with machinists, engineers, and team leads to resolve questionable product issues
- Maintain a clean, organized inspection area and support continuous improvement initiatives
- Manage and maintain the calibration system for all measuring tools
- Participate in internal and customer audits and training related to ISO 9001 and QMS
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Technical or vocational training in machining or manufacturing preferred
- 2–3 years of experience in a machine shop environment with a strong quality focus
- Strong ability to perform independent inspections on one-off jobs (no predetermined plans)
- Proficient in blueprint reading, GD&T, and mechanical inspection tools
- Willingness to learn and apply ISO 9001 and QMS procedures
- Ability to safely operate cranes and lifts and lift up to 50 lbs
- Strong attention to detail, communication, and teamwork skills
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in Quality Control / Inspection
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, Epicor ERP, SharePoint, or similar systems
- Experience with CAD, Faro Arm, Laser Tracker, CMM, and related software
- Working knowledge of ISO 9001
- Experience supporting root cause analysis and nonconformance investigations
