Position Overview:
The Machine Shop Manager is responsible for managing all operations within the machine shop, ensuring efficient production, adherence to quality standards, and effective team management. This role will supervise the Mill Leads, Lathe Leads, and their teams while providing hands-on expertise, especially in Mastercam programming. The Machine Shop Manager will be the key leader in driving continuous improvement, maintaining equipment, and ensuring the shop operates within budget and safety regulations.


Key Responsibilities:
1. Leadership & Supervision:

  • Supervise the daily operations of the machine shop, ensuring productivity and workflow efficiency.
  • Directly oversee Mill Leads, Lathe Leads, and their respective teams, providing mentorship and support.
  • Conduct performance reviews, offer feedback, and develop employees professionally.
  • Promote a culture of teamwork, safety, and high performance.
     

2. Programming & Technical Expertise:

  • Serve as the lead Mastercam programmer for all CNC machinery (mills and lathes).
  • Review and optimize CNC programs for accuracy, efficiency, and cost control.
  • Provide timely responses to quote requests and drawing reviews
  • Troubleshoot technical issues, offering both guidance and direct support.
  • Stay updated on new technology in CNC machining and Mastercam advancements.
     

3. Operations Management:

  • Plan and execute strategies for improving productivity, quality, and operational efficiencies.
  • Ensure production schedules are met and oversee the smooth flow of work between departments.
  • Manage the maintenance and calibration of machines and tools to ensure peak performance.
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to ensure clear communication and job execution.
     

4. Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure the machine shop complies with all safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Conduct safety audits and implement procedures for the safe operation of machinery.
  • Provide regular safety training and promote a culture of safety.
     

5. Cost Control & Inventory Management:

  • Monitor and manage the machine shop’s budget, focusing on cost efficiency.
  • Oversee inventory levels for materials, tools, and consumables to meet production needs.
  • Ensure optimal use of resources and minimize production downtime.
     

6. Continuous Improvement:

  • Drive process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and reduce waste.
  • Implement Lean Manufacturing principles or similar methodologies to improve workflow.
  • Lead training and development programs to enhance employee skills and knowledge.

     

Required Qualifications:
Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years in a CNC machining environment, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong experience in Mastercam programming (both lathe and mill operations).
  • In-depth understanding of machining processes, tools, and equipment.

Skills:

  • Proficient in Mastercam for CNC programming.
  • Strong leadership abilities with excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Capable of reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Relevant experience and technical certifications will also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with Lean Manufacturing methodologies.
• Knowledge of machine tool maintenance and repair.
• Familiarity with ERP systems and production scheduling software.
