Heat Treat Process Engineer

BG Workforce Solutions is hiring a Heat Treat Process Engineer to stand up, own, and run heat-treatment operations in an advanced manufacturing facility on Oahu. This is a hands-on engineering role. The incumbent both executes approved thermal processes and owns the process book, records, and equipment discipline that those processes depend on.

Work covers a defined range of metallic alloys and material conditions. The role is responsible for lot traceability, furnace readiness, cycle integrity, post-process verification, and accurate documentation in a controlled manufacturing environment that supports defense and other highly specified work.

A formal metallurgy or materials-science degree is not required. What is required is industrial furnace time, sound judgment around temperature, atmosphere or vacuum, and quench, and the discipline to produce records that will stand up to customer and quality review. Process parameters are changed only through controlled revision—not on the floor.

Key Responsibilities

Operations and execution

• Receive and verify incoming material: alloy, starting condition, heat/lot identification, quantity, and required processing.
• Select the applicable approved heat-treatment cycle from the controlled process library. Do not improvise parameters.
• Prepare, load, instrument, program, run, and monitor industrial furnaces and associated quench and atmosphere or vacuum systems.
• Set up and maintain process accessories, including load and control thermocouples, atmosphere or vacuum controls, quench equipment, and related instrumentation.
• Perform in-process and post-process verification, including hardness, conductivity, and other applicable checks.
• Complete travelers, furnace charts, load records, and equipment logs the same shift the work is performed.
• Support routine inspections, preventive maintenance, calibration support, and first-line troubleshooting of heat-treat equipment.

Process ownership

• Maintain the approved process library: recipes, soak times, load-size limits, quench media, and fixture or load practices.
• Support pyrometry discipline, including load thermocouples, SAT and TUS coordination, and out-of-tolerance response consistent with AMS 2750 practice.
• Write and revise work instructions, standard load practices, and operator training material.
• Support process qualification and first-article thermal processing for new part numbers.
• Work with quality and engineering to disposition process discrepancies and nonconforming heat-treat results (NCR / MRB support).
• Identify and implement improvements to reliability, safety, efficiency, and repeatability through controlled process change.
• Maintain a safe, organized, and compliant work area around furnaces, quench systems, and material handling equipment.

Required Qualifications

• Three or more years of industrial heat treatment, thermal processing, or equivalent furnace operations experience.
• Hands-on experience programming, operating, and monitoring industrial furnaces.
• Working knowledge of thermocouples, furnace controls, atmosphere or vacuum systems, and quenching methods.
• Ability to interpret material specifications, travelers, work instructions, and technical documentation.
• Demonstrated understanding of material identification, lot control, and traceability.
• Ability to perform or support basic material characterization such as hardness or conductivity testing.
• Strong documentation habits; complete, legible, same-shift records.
• Ability to troubleshoot equipment and process issues on the shop floor.
• Ability to work effectively with engineering, quality, maintenance, training, and production personnel.
• U.S. person as defined for export-controlled work; able to satisfy applicable DoD background requirements and obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance if required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience across multiple alloys and conditions (for example aluminum solution treat and age, steels, stainless, nickel alloys, or titanium).
• Vacuum and/or controlled-atmosphere heat treat; multiple quench methods.
• Familiarity with AMS 2750 pyrometry, temperature uniformity surveys, and system accuracy tests.
• Furnace preventive maintenance, calibration, or TUS support.
• Aerospace, defense, or other highly controlled manufacturing environment (AS9100, Nadcap heat treat, or equivalent discipline).
• Experience training operators or writing standard operating procedures.
• Technical degree, certification, apprenticeship, or equivalent training in manufacturing, materials, mechanical systems, or industrial processes.
• Military or veteran experience.

Work Environment

This is an on-site position on Oahu within an operating advanced manufacturing environment. The Heat Treat Process Engineer works directly with industrial furnaces, quench systems, material-handling equipment, and associated instrumentation.

The role requires close attention to safety, process discipline, lot traceability, equipment condition, and established procedures. Candidates should expect shop-floor conditions: heat, required PPE, quench media, standing for extended periods, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Shift is primarily days; long soak cycles may require extended or off-shift coverage.

Work may involve ITAR-controlled hardware and visitor-controlled areas.
