Why this job is worth considering

ABC Sheet Metal is looking for an experienced CNC Setup Machinist to set up and run 3-axis and 5-axis mills on the second shift. The schedule is four days, Monday through Thursday, so every Friday is open.

The work is varied. You will machine precision components, tooling, fixtures, and secondary machining on formed sheet metal parts, weldments, and fabricated assemblies for aerospace, defense, and commercial customers. The shop is AS9100 and ISO 9001 certified, and it offers health and dental coverage, a 401(k), paid vacation, and holiday pay.

What you'll be doing

• Complete machine setups, including tooling, fixtures, workholding, tool and work offsets, datums, and part alignment.
• Prove out prepared CNC programs, verify the first piece, and run production jobs safely and accurately.
• Make basic G-code edits at the machine and work with programming personnel to resolve program issues.
• Inspect parts during production with micrometers, calipers, indicators, height gauges, and other precision measuring tools.
• Build or modify custom fixtures, soft jaws, and setup tooling, and use manual or conventional shop equipment as needed.
• Troubleshoot dimensional, surface finish, tooling, and workholding issues, adjusting offsets, speeds, feeds, and tooling to hold quality.
• Work with programming, quality, and production personnel to improve setup time, cycle time, and machining consistency.

Machines, controls and software

• 3-axis and 5-axis CNC mills
• Haas UMC-series 5-axis machines (preferred experience)
• Haas controls and basic G-code editing
• Mastercam familiarity (preferred)

What we're looking for

Required

• 6+ years of CNC setup and machining experience in precision machining, a job shop, or a similarly complex manufacturing environment.
• Independent 5-axis CNC mill setup experience, plus experience setting up and operating 3-axis mills.
• Strong blueprint reading and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) skills.
• Proficiency in basic G-code editing, precision measurement, custom workholding, and machining troubleshooting.
• Ability to work independently, communicate technical issues clearly, and meet quality and production requirements.
• Availability to work the second-shift schedule.

Preferred

• Haas UMC-series setup experience. Candidates with 5-axis mill setup experience on other machine brands are encouraged to apply.
• Haas or Renishaw probing experience.
• Aerospace manufacturing experience, or familiarity with AS9100 or ISO 9001 quality systems.
• Secondary machining experience on formed sheet metal components, weldments, or fabricated assemblies.
• Mastercam familiarity.
