The CNC Programmer & Set-Up Operator is responsible for programming, setting up, operating, and monitoring CNC machinery (mills, lathes, grinders, and EDM machines) to produce high-precision parts. This role bridges advanced manufacturing software with hands-on floor operations—translating CAD/CAM designs into optimized machine instructions, independently performing complex machine set-ups, and ensuring strict adherence to engineering blueprints and quality standards.

Primary Responsibilities

1. CNC Programming & CAM Optimization

  • Develop & Write Programs: Create efficient CNC programs for multi-axis machinery using CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Blueprint Translation: Translate engineering drawings, CAD models, blueprints, and design specifications into accurate machine code and instructions.
  • Optimize Performance: Optimize tool paths, feeds, and speeds to maximize productivity, reduce cycle times, and minimize tool wear.
  • Continuous Updates: Modify programs as needed based on initial test runs, machine performance, quality checks, or shifting production requirements.

2. Machine Set-Up & Operation

  • Independent Set-Ups: Set up and operate CNC machines from scratch, including loading programs, tooling, workholding fixtures, and raw materials.
  • Tooling Management: Install, adjust, and monitor cutting tools and machine accessories; troubleshoot tooling wear or breakage issues.
  • Safety & Efficiency: Safely load and unload raw materials and finished components while maintaining high operational efficiency.
  • Monitoring: Monitor active machine operations to detect unusual sounds, vibrations, or potential malfunctions.

3. Quality Assurance & Inspection

  • Precision Measurement: Verify first-piece, in-process, and final-part dimensions using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.).
  • Troubleshooting: Investigate machining errors, identify root causes, and make necessary coordinate, offset, or program adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy.
  • Compliance: Ensure all completed parts conform strictly to engineering specifications and company quality standards.

4. Tool & Die Fabrication Support

  • Collaboration: Collaborate closely with tool and die makers to ensure the flawless physical implementation of CNC programs.
  • Initial Run Support: Assist directly in the setup and operation of CNC machinery during initial trial runs to verify program safety and accuracy.
  • Design Feasibility: Provide technical guidance to engineering and production teams regarding design manufacturability and process improvements.

5. Maintenance, Documentation & Continuous Improvement

  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of CNC programs, tooling instructions, job specifications, inspection sheets, and downtime logs.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine machine cleaning, lubrication, and basic preventive maintenance to ensure equipment is properly calibrated.
  • Process Improvement: Support and lead continuous improvement initiatives (5S) aimed at boosting safety, quality, productivity, and workflow efficiency.
  • Safety Adherence: Follow all company safety protocols, including wearing required PPE and ensuring proper use of machine guarding.
  • General: Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or Production Engineer.
