Why This Role Exists
This role exists due to continued production demand supporting U.S. Navy aircraft carrier and submarine programs.
At Newport News Shipbuilding, CNC Machinists play a critical role in manufacturing and maintaining some of the most advanced naval vessels in the world. This position supports high-precision machining operations focused on quality, consistency, safety, and craftsmanship in a large-scale industrial manufacturing environment.
The Work You’ll Be Doing
In this role, you will:
- Set up and operate manual or CNC machinery
- Work with lathes, mills, vertical machining centers, and horizontal boring mills
- Troubleshoot machining operations and make process adjustments as needed
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work instructions
- Verify dimensions and perform quality inspections to print specifications
- Utilize precision measuring instruments and strong math skills daily
- Support production in a fast-paced shipyard manufacturing environment
- Work closely with other machinists, maintenance teams, and production leadership

What We’re Looking For
Required:
- 3+ years of machining experience
- Experience operating manual and/or CNC equipment
- Strong blueprint reading and math skills
- Ability to troubleshoot machining operations
- Comfortable working in industrial manufacturing conditions
- Ability to work in confined spaces, heights, and varying weather conditions
- Reliable, safety-minded, and team-oriented
- U.S. Citizenship required
Preferred (Not Required):
- Automotive repair experience
- Plant maintenance experience
- Machinery installation or repair background
- Technical or vocational training in:
- Machining
- Diesel Technology
- HVAC
- Automotive Technology
