Experience: 1+ years operating multi-axis CNC machines
Machines: Multi-axis CNC milling machines
Controls: G-code / M-code programming

Why this job is worth considering

voestalpine Railway Systems Nortrak has been building special trackwork for North America's railroads for over 160 years, and this Birmingham plant is part of that supply chain. As CNC Machinist, you'd operate and maintain multi-axis CNC milling machines that clean and prepare castings, reporting directly to the Department Supervisor. It's hands-on work with real ownership over program quality — managing CNC programs for recurring parts, running first-article inspections with QA, and helping teammates troubleshoot machine and tooling issues.

What you'll be doing

  • Operate and maintain multi-axis CNC milling machines
  • Read, interpret, and adjust G-code programming to ensure accurate machining; apply M-code programming when needed
  • Monitor machine operations to confirm correct tooling, cutters, and speeds
  • Manage CNC programs for recurring parts and issue them ahead of production needs
  • Help teammates with CNC program questions, machine operation, and tooling issues
  • Track hand tools, carbide inserts, and other small tooling — stock, usage, and ordering
  • Work with QA and production teams to complete first-article runs within tolerance
  • Help with machinery maintenance, installation, and setup
  • Suggest ways to improve efficiency and reduce costs through better tooling and methods

Machines, controls and software

  • Multi-axis CNC milling machines
  • G-code programming — reading, modifying, and troubleshooting
  • M-code programming (an asset, not required)

What we're looking for

Required

  • College degree in manufacturing technology or programming preferred, or equivalent CNC programming experience in a heavy manufacturing environment
  • Proven experience operating multi-axis CNC machines
  • Strong understanding of G-code programming, with the ability to read, modify, and troubleshoot code
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints
  • Proficient with precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers)
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality
  • Good problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude

Preferred

  • Familiarity with M-code programming
