JOB SUMMARY

The primary purpose of this position is to oversee machining operations and guide staff to appropriate workflow, quality and on time completion. This position constantly seeks to ensure all machining activities are conducted in a manner to achieve company quality and productivity goals, while maintaining safety as an overriding priority.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Supervisory duties 60%

  • Oversees and organizes the schedules and work of department.
  • Ensures department has appropriate staff to meet objectives.
  • Assists with preparation of budgets for department.
  • Keeps and maintains appropriate production and employee records.
  • Ensures that assigned staff comply with company policies and safety standards.
  • Coordinates with senior management to respond to employee concerns or complaints.
  • Work with Leads to coordinate builds on a daily basis.
  • Assist in problem solving, making suggestions, and guiding staff accordingly.
  • Ensure the weekly product line status reports are accurate; Present at weekly meeting.
  • Performance management – conduct annual reviews for each employee; monitoring performance on a daily basis; correct performance where necessary through disciplinary action, training, guiding etc., depending on the issue at hand.
  • Ensure safety of employees by ensuring they use tools and equipment properly and safety;
  • Collaborate effectively with manufacturing and employees in other departments, ensuring positive relationship building
  • Coordinates handling of manufacturing personnel issues with HR when necessary.

General 35%

  • Perform machining tasks to assist machining staff as needed.
  • Organize and perform machining operations on assigned projects, delegate tasks as necessary.
  • Perform leadman duties for assigned projects.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Ensure strong coordination with Sales, Engineering, and Assembly.
  • Promote/Role model a positive attitude and strong team engagement.
  • Understands and reacts positively to constraints related to available resources, making judgement in the best interest of the company on the most efficient use of resources by balancing between cost and delivery.
  • Promotes a culture of continuous improvement across all manufacturing functions by encouraging employees to develop recommendations related to their primary functions and/or expertise.
  • Continuously assess performance of all machining functions to ensure all functions have adequate resources, materials, and information to be as productive and efficient as possible.
  • Identifies shortcomings in staffing and advises supervisor in recruitment, employee performance improvement up to termination, training, and development of staff to meet company performance needs.
  • Maintains knowledge of manufacturing technologies and processes current to advanced industry standards.
  • Advises management on purchase of new machinery, equipment, tooling, and software to ensure the company maintains maximum competitiveness in industry.

  • Participate in special projects as requested by executive management.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong listening skills to fully understand the inquiries, direction and communications among all employees
  • Strong written, oral communication and organization skills
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities
  • Well versed in Microsoft Office and the ability to easily learn how to use other computer programs.
  • Familiar with Epicor or similar ERP software.
  • Understands blueprints, job travelers, work instructions, program and tooling sheets, tooling specifications, quality documents and familiar with GD&T.
  • Familiarity with Mastercam and SolidWorks or similar CAD/CAM software.
  • Expert at using handheld inspection tools such as vernier calipers, OD/ID micrometers, bore gauges, etc. and understanding the correct application for each type.
  • Expert at reading and interpreting engineering technical drawings, tolerancing, and GD&T.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturability of various types materials such as Aluminums, Steels, Stainless Steels, Tool Steels, and Plastics.
  • Strong understanding of various machining and fabricating processes, and electro-mechanical assembly.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of types of tooling and machinery, their correct applications, and proper use.

Experience required:

  • Ten plus years or related experience, with at least five years of supervisory experience or related skills developed otherwise

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associates or bachelor degree in a technical discipline a plus

ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS

Sitting, standing, stooping, bending, standard lifting up to 15 pounds, carrying, repetitive movements due primarily to computer work. Must be able to traverse the entire facility. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. All of the ergonomic requirements must be performed without significant risk of injury to oneself or others, or otherwise demonstrated or explain how one can perform essential functions of the position listed above.
