Steel America, a business unit of Colonna's Shipyard, is looking for a 1st Class Inside Machinist to handle precision machining, fabrication, modification, and repair of metal components and assemblies for ship systems. You'll work with a variety of manually operated machine tools on real shipboard parts — engines, pumps, valves, and other mechanical assemblies — where tight tolerances actually matter. The role is based onsite in Norfolk and works 2nd shift.

What you'll be doing

• Perform precision machining tasks on manually operated equipment such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and boring mills to fabricate, modify, and repair metal components to exact specifications.
• Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to plan and execute machining operations.
• Manufacture parts and components for ship systems, including engines, pumps, valves, and other mechanical assemblies, to tight tolerances.
• Inspect machined parts and assemblies using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
• Select appropriate tools, materials, and machine settings for each job, and set up and adjust machines to achieve the desired outcome.
• Perform routine maintenance on machining equipment and diagnose and resolve issues as they arise.
• Maintain accurate records of machining work performed, collaborate with other trades and departments, and mentor other crew members as needed.

What we're looking for

Required

• At least 5 years of experience as an inside machinist, preferably in a marine or shipyard environment — or a graduate of a registered apprenticeship program relevant to the trade.
• Demonstrated expertise in precision machining, blueprint reading, and quality control.
• Proficient with manual machine tools and precision measuring instruments.
• Ability to lift heavy materials, stand for extended periods, and operate machinery in a shop environment.

Pay, benefits and schedule

$29.89 - $37.81 per hour, 2nd shift. This position is based onsite in Norfolk, VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability to support production and operations.
