CNC Mill Machinist Pay — What Shops Are Actually Posting

If you run a VMC or a 3-, 4-, or 5-axis mill, here’s what shops on our board are actually posting for the role — not a government average, not a guess. Same live-board method as the rest of this pay series: every figure below comes from real JobPosting data on hirecnc.com, pulled September 10, 2026.

The Numbers

Median pay for CNC mill machinist postings on our board right now: $32.50/hr, across 35 live listings that post a range. The middle half of postings run $29.50 to $38.50/hr.

That puts mill work almost exactly alongside setup machinist ($32.50/hr, n=47) and just above lathe/turning ($32.00/hr, n=38) — mill isn’t the top-paying specialty on the board, but it isn’t the bottom either. Operators sit lowest at $26.25/hr; CNC programmers sit highest at $40.00/hr. See the full ladder on the pay hub.

What Pushes Mill Pay Higher

The highest-paying mill postings on the board right now cluster around specialized work — national-lab precision machining, multi-axis contract work, and platform-specific programming — not tenure alone:

  • Los Alamos National Laboratory (NM) — Senior Machinist, Machinist 4/5 — $38.65–$68.75/hr
  • Talon Precision (CT) — CNC Setup Machinist, Mills & Lathes, Fanuc/Okuma, 3-month contract — $45.00/hr flat
  • American Machine Company (MA) — CNC Mill Programmer/Machinist, Haas — $40.00–$50.00/hr

Outside these standout postings, expect mill work to land closer to the $29–$38 range on this board; if you’re trusted with specialized or contract-based work, there’s real room above $45/hr.

How This Compares to the Government Number

The BLS doesn’t break out CNC mill machinists specifically — the closest figure is the blended “machinists” median, $26.99/hr (May 2024, Occupational Outlook Handbook). That’s a workforce-wide average across everyone already in the seat; our board number reflects what shops are actively offering to compete for someone right now, which is a different question. Worth knowing both, not picking one as “the real number.”
