Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented CNC ID / OD Grinding Machinist to join our team at Schafer Gear Works in Roscoe, Illinois. In this role, you will be responsible for setting up, adjusting, and operating CNC and conventional grinding machines to achieve precise dimensions and finishes on metallic and non-metallic parts.
You will also support continuous improvement initiatives, resolve machining issues, and ensure optimal machine performance to meet strict quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Machining & Setup:
- Set up and operate internal and external CNC grinding machines
- Align and secure tooling, attachments, and materials
- Calculate and program grinding parameters such as speed, feed, and depth
- Run trial parts and verify accuracy of machine settings
Quality Assurance:
- Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and sample parts
- Inspect finished components to ensure they meet dimensional and finish standards
- Follow ISO guidelines and Schafer-specific quality procedures
- Complete internal quality certification requirements
Machine Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
- Perform routine machine checks and preventative maintenance
- Detect and correct malfunctions or tolerance issues
- Work with engineers and programmers to resolve production challenges
Operational Efficiency:
- Prepare tooling, fixtures, and materials ahead of scheduled jobs
- Reduce setup time and enhance productivity through process improvements
- Track tooling performance and recommend cost-effective alternatives
- Maintain a clean and organized work area under the 6S program
- Submit suggestions for continuous improvement
Team Contribution:
- Train new team members on machine operation
- Communicate shift updates and important notes in the daily logbook
- Provide input for ongoing quality and process enhancements
- Assist in other grinding areas when needed
Required Qualifications
- Two years of CNC grinding experience or a related technical certification
- Ability to read technical drawings and blueprints
- Strong understanding of machining principles and grinding techniques
- Proficiency with measurement tools and computer-controlled systems
- Physical ability to perform job tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds
- Effective communication in English, both written and verbal
- Basic computer skills
