Starts machine and observes cutting operation • Ability to finish set up of a machine with minimal assistance and within a reasonable time frame • Makes offsets independently to finish the set-up process • Sets up and replaces tools without supervision • Recognizes tool wear before dimensions are affected • Ability to make basic changes to programs on machines • Compares numerical data display with specifications on operations sheet • Adjusts tool lengths and fixture offsets if required • Monitors tooling usage for maximum cost effectiveness • Responsible for the accuracy and quality of the part • Ability to understand and document requirements of Inspecting Plans • Authorized to stop processes to ensure quality • Responsible for machine turnovers to adjacent shift operators • Works overtime as required • Other duties as assigned EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Associate degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or at least one-year related experience and/or training LANGUAGE SKILLS: • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, routers and inspections procedures • Ability to read and interpret blueprints • Ability to read and understand G and M code programming MATHEMATICAL SKILLS • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry or ability to use a trig book. • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations preferred. REASONING ABILITY: • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. The CNC machinist position is in a toolroom (high mix/low volume) environment. The person in this position will have the opportunity to program, setup, and run a variety of machines such as; CNC vertical milling, CNC bridge milling, CNC horizontal lathe, CNC gun drill, and CNC waterjet. Duties / Responsibilities Operate CNC Lathes and Mills to include: Set Up Tooling <ul><li>Install turning, milling, drilling and boring tools in tool turret according to CNC set up sheet </li><li>Set tool geometry and cutter compensation values in controller.</li><li>Set work shift and fixture offset values for each programmed part. </li><li>Adjust wear values in the controller tool table. </li></ul> Load and Machine Parts <ul><li>Understand specifications of the task at hand and the desired result by reading blueprints, mechanical drawings etc.</li><li>Understand general machining practices.</li><li>Prepare and run test runs to verify program function.</li><li>Load and operate lathe bar feeder. </li><li>Set up mill fixtures and vises. Create custom fixtures/jaws when necessary.</li><li>Install collets, chucks, jaws, etc. on lathe spindle.</li><li>Maintain specifications by monitoring all machining operations.</li><li>Visually inspect parts for flaws.</li><li>Take measurements, detect malfunctions, troubleshoot processes.</li><li>Watch and listen for worn tooling. Replace as needed.</li><li>Track mill cert numbers when required.</li></ul> Read Engineering Drawings and CNC Programming <ul><li>Measure parts and compare to drawings.</li><li>Be able to read and use calipers, micrometers, and other measuring tools.</li><li>Understand CNC G-code programming.</li></ul> Operate Horizontal Band Saw <ul><li>Set up material stop for proper length.</li><li>Cut bar stock to specified size.</li><li>Clean chips and maintain as needed.</li></ul> Monitor Coolant Levels in Lathes, Saws, and Band Saw <ul><li>Mix and add coolant as necessary.</li><li>Periodically monitor coolant mix.
