The Machinist Apprentice will work with an experienced Machinist/Trainor/Mentor to maintain the production processes and work within the expected quality standards and efficiencies that are established for the product line. CNC Machinist Apprentice Responsibilities: <ul><li>Operate manual and automated machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments.</li><li>Maintain and repair machine tools and equipment.</li><li>Read blueprints, schematics, diagrams, or technical orders to determine the specific operation to be performed.</li><li>Measure dimensions of finished workpieces to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measuring instruments.</li><li>Set up and adjust machines, such as lathes, milling machines and grinders</li><li>Read part prints and job orders for all product specifications, i.e., dimensions, tolerances, inspection, number of parts to be machined and tooling instructions such as cutting speeds, feed rates, depth of cuts, and cutting tools required</li><li>Use machine controls to cycle machine through; production operations, set-up, adjusting tool positions, and changing tools. Also, to review machine operating criteria such as cycle time and spindle rpm</li><li>Install specified collets, bushings, and stock pushers onto stock feeding mechanism and loads bar stock into feeding mechanism.</li><li>Install and adjust specified cams, gears and stops to control stock and tool movements at each station.</li><li>Change, position and secure tools in tool holders by utilizing tool monitoring system and presetting equipment.</li><li>Perform first piece sample inspection according to the operation control plan. By utilizing qualified measuring devices, the machinist monitors the part dimensions through continuous checking of part features and process control tools (such as SPC).</li><li>Maintain all lubricants and coolants, and other operator maintenance, on the machine that are used in daily operation.</li><li>Perform data collection and communication tasks in Epicor and other applications.</li><li>Keep work area clean and organized.</li><li>Participate in continuous improvement activities and use the accepted tools, such as -- brainstorming, C&amp;E, tool tryout sheets.</li><li>Other duties and tasks as assigned.</li></ul> Skills &amp; Abilities <ul><li> Fundamental machining principles; turning, milling, grinding.</li><li> Fundamental understanding of machining theory, including x, y and z axis, along with edge and centerline pickup.</li><li> Reading and interpreting technical documentation; including blueprints. </li><li> Proper use of metric scales, micrometers, calipers, and optical comparators and various other gauges.</li><li> Required to be on feet ten to twelve hours per day using their hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear around machinery.</li><li> Required to frequently walk, sit, stoop, kneel or crouch; under, over and around machines. </li><li> Capable of lifting and moving up to 25 pounds potentially on a frequent basis.</li><li> Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus on optical devices. Use of microscopes, magnifiers, and optical comparators will be expected.</li><li> Individuals will safely work near moving mechanical parts of machinery and electrically activated devices. Position Summary Sets-up and operates all machinery within the shoe department, including all fabrication equipment, plating and piston/shoe assembly equipment if the cell is expanded to include those operations. It is understood that in a working department, the specific machines and equipment are subject to change, as well as individual machines/equipment may be added or removed. Operates two or multiple machines simultaneously, when possible, and operators will be performing cross-training functions as well. Responsibilities Works with a minimum amount of supervision. Works from blueprints, process sheets, inspection plans, customer, company or military specifications and/or instructions from supervision. Maintain traveler package, generate traceable paperwork, complete and maintain appropriate quality records, and to physically move product within the department. Perform all certified operator inspection requirements. A general knowledge of SPC (control charts) and their application is necessary. Sets-up (when required) and operates all machines, making all necessary adjustments to machines or tools as required. Improvises or adapts available equipment to produce parts to blueprint and process dimensions and specifications. Receives, inspects, and stores within the cell all raw material and supplies required for shoe fabrication, and eventually shoe plating and piston/shoe assembly when/if the cell is expanded to include those operations. Receives, stores, and manages finished shoes and pistons in a point-of-use storage approach within the assembly area of the cell. Interfaces with Met Lab and quality control to review and maintain material and OPR certifications. Maintains in good working order all necessary tooling, fixturing, and related accessories to support production requirements of the machines in the department, be proficient with MP2 Datastream and the TPM program. Must have a good knowledge of and ability to apply shop mathematics. Responsible for maintaining calibrated gages. Helps to train/instruct other employees as required. Productivity shall be equal to or above established standards and shall conform to prescribed quality. Exercises good judgment and care in handling of all tools, gages, and parts that are in process. Proactively keeps their machines and work areas clean and in good order. Participates in "continuous improvement" efforts within the classification/department. Qualifications Qualifications Experience with CNC machining strongly preferred Must be willing to accept constructive feedback and suggestions from supervision. Must have above-average initiative and must cooperate with his/her supervisor and service departments to bring about quality and quantity of production. Must have a good knowledge of and ability to apply shop mathematics. Must be able to properly interpret complex blueprints, process sheets, company, customer and/or military specifications and apply such interpretations to his/her job. Must have a thorough knowledge of and ability to use all precision gaging required on the job. Must be willing to learn or obtain new skills through cross-training or specific training sessions.
