The Layton Utah facility specializes in machining the largest most complex structures built from carbon fiber composites and aluminum for the aerospace and space exploration markets. The parts produced are installed on todays most advanced fighters, bombers, rockets, and space vehicles. Janicki Industries continues to lead the market with both innovations and abilities alike. This position is located on-site in Layton, Utah.

CNC programming interns are college students who work for Janicki Industries to obtain work experience in computer numerically controlled machining processes. The intern will gain experience in Seimens NX CAM functions as well as running Janicki's custom built 5-axid machines that are up to 80'x14'x6' in working envelope. These machines are utilized to machine the largest and most complex aluminum and composite single piece structure parts on cutting edge space and aerospace platforms. Internships take place during a college break, e.g., summer break for a duration of 10-12 weeks (minimum commitment of 10 weeks). Work assignments depend upon the projects currently available at the time the student is employed.


Specific job functions will depend on the specific project(s) to which the intern is assigned but will include CNC programming support of machining activities. The functions listed below are general in nature and apply to all CNC programming interns.
  • Applies their knowledge of basic machining principles to solve complex technical problems working with a team of engineers and programmers.
  • Determines methods, cutter types, and cutting parameters depending on a variety of materials (composites, steel, aluminum, etc.) and design specifications.
  • Works directly with the machine operators to make sure machining procedures are followed and toolpaths perform as expected with the desired results.
  • Runs CNC machines including setups, locates, and cutting on products.
  • Works independently and efficiently with excellent organizational skills and a high level of clerical procedures.
  • Communicates effectively and appropriately; uses good judgment as to what to communicate to whom as well as the best way to get that accomplished; speaks in a clear and credible manner, selecting the right tone for the situation and audience; listens to others and allows them to make their point.
  • Recognizes opportunities and initiates actions to capitalize on them; looks for new and productive ways to make an impact; demonstrates this characteristic when it comes to generating new ideas or processes, seeking out and taking on increasing responsibility or resolving problems as they occur; uses sound judgment about when to act and when to seek guidance or permission.
  • Completes assignments given by the respective assigned mentor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Must be able to work well in an integrated, multidisciplinary, collaborative, team environment, including daily interactions with technicians, millwrights, machinists, engineers, and managers.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • Must be able to work well independently and under pressure, meeting and completing multiple deadlines.
  • Must possess effective oral and written communication skills in the English language.
  • All positions require at least a high school diploma or GED. Advanced degree or certificate preferred.
  • Wage range for this role is between $23 - $26 an hour plus a discretionary bonus, 401(k) matching, vacation, and health benefits. Employees can also receive additional pay for off-shifts, off-site work, and access pay. The range provided is Janicki's estimate of the base compensation for this role. Actual amount offered will be based on job-related and non-discriminatory factors such as experience, location, education, training, skills, and abilities.
